I've used iWork 06 and 08 extensively over the past couple of years. IWork 08 is very compatible with MS Word, PPT and you can export to those document types and share them easily. The problem I've encountered is with Numbers, iWork's version of Excel. You can open up the Excel version and import, but have had problems with exporting and all of the tables converting the right way. Numbers is great for giving presentations and if you don't need to do Excel homework, but honestly Excel is better than iWork's version. Also try Open Office for Mac. Personally, I think that iWork is worth the money because of all the layout and presentation features.
